Looking for a home in a location that offers the convenience of the city and the close proximity to businesses, services and support systems? Or perhaps your family wants to live in an area that offers walking and cycling paths, fishing and other outdoors activities?
Washington Park and its surrounding area provide the best of both worlds. With its location on the near west side of Springfield, it is close to restaurants, shopping and the downtown district. It also is home to 150 acres of trees, plants, flowers, lagoons, tennis courts and numerous trails and roads for walking, running and cycling.
The beauty and offerings of Washington Park should not come as a surprise for those who have grown up in the Springfield area. For those who are looking to move to the city, however, it is worth checking out the elegant homes around the park that was established in 1901. To put that date into historical perspective, it is the same year the body of President Abraham Lincoln was reburied in his permanent tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The park also is home to a preschool program and facility, a botanical gardens and the world-renowned Rees Memorial Carillon. The 12-story structure towers over the landscape, making it one of the largest carillons in the world and host of the International Carillon Festival held each June. The 67 bells fill the neighborhood air with their melodious sounds throughout the year.
All of this has made Washington Park the hub of a beautiful neighborhood for more than 100 years. If you haven’t been there in a while, take the time to revisit the park and its landmarks. If you are new to the area, then get ready to enjoy the view.
